Child Trust Fund: Government Committees

The Treasury Committee has reviewed the operation of the child trust fund (CTF) on several occasions both prior to and after its introduction.

In December 2003, the Treasury Committee published a report on Child Trust Funds which examined the Government's proposals with a view to informing the debate on the Child Trust Fund Bill (which subsequently became the Child Trust Fund Act 2004).

The Government's response to this report was published in February 2004.

In November 2005 the Treasury Committee took oral evidence about the operational running of the CTF. Child Poverty Action Group submitted evidence in advance of the November 2005 session.

In May 2008, the Treasury Committee again took oral evidence about the CTF. The Low Incomes Tax Reform Group submitted evidence prior to this session raising concerns about additional payments.

As a result of this evidence session, the Treasury wrote to the Committee setting out changes to the legislation that would solve some of the problems raised around additional payments.
