HMRC sending SMS text messages to contact tax credit claimants
HMRC provide a list of the types of messages they send to their customers using e-mail or text messages, to help reassure people that they are genuine and not phishing or scam e-mails/messages. This list is available on GOV.UK.
The list includes SMS text messages and voice messages from HMRC for tax credit claimants in the following situations:
- Between April 2015 and July 2015 to tax credit claimants who send in their renewal or a new claim, to confirm HMRC have received it and that it is being processed.
- Reminder messages to renew their tax credit claims, the message directs claimants to the GOV.UK website.
- Where the income details provided by claimants differ from those HMRC hold on their employer records.
None of the messages ask for a reply with any personal or financial information and anyone who needs to respond is directed either to the GOV.UK website for relevant information or to call an HMRC telephone number starting with 03000.
