Universal credit migration - Prime Minister’s speech 19 April 2024

The Prime Minister mentioned the migration from legacy benefits to universal credit in his speech on welfare on 19 April 2024.

The speech referred to accelerating 'moving people from legacy benefits onto Universal Credit, to give them more access to the world of work'. We understand this reference relates to people currently receiving ESA alone or ESA with housing benefit.

We expect further detail about any changes to the current managed migration schedule to become available over the coming days and will update the website as soon as possible.

A transcipt of the Prime Minister's speech is available on the GOV.UK website and there is also a press release from DWP.
