Missed the renewals deadline?
Tax credit claimants had until 31 July 2018 to renew their tax credit claims for 2018/2019. Anyone who was required to contact HMRC to renew but hasn’t done so will probably have had their tax credits payments stopped by now and will receive a statement of account from HMRC asking for any tax credit money they have received since 6 April 2018 to be repaid.
HMRC can still process the renewal if claimants contact them within 30 days of their statement of account.
Claimants in this position and who want their tax credits to continue should contact HMRC as soon as possible (within 30 days of their statement of account) to ask them to renew the claim and restore the award back to the start of the tax year, April 2018.
Claimants who missed the renewal deadline and have subsequently claimed universal credit (UC), can ask HMRC to restore their tax credit renewal award up to the day before their UC claim start date.
Claimants who can’t meet the 30-day grace period to contact HMRC, can still renew if they contact HMRC by 31 January 2019 and can show HMRC that they have good cause for missing the deadlines.
You can read more detail in our renewals section.
