Tax Credits: Domestic violence
There are special processes that staff should follow where a tax credits claimant indicates that they are in a domestic violence situation.
We previously held detailed guidance on this page about domestic violence, unfortunately this appears to have been withdrawn from the tax credit manuals. HMRC have confirmed to us that there is still a team within the tax credit office that deals with domestic violence cases referred by the HMRC helpline. The team provides help to claimants going from a joint claim to a single claim. However, their processes are not included in the HMRC manuals.
HMRC's debt manual contains some guidance on how HMRC treat tax credit overpayments in cases where domestic violence is notified to them.
